Great Tunes For A Winter Weekend by Melody Gardot

I found this wonderful artist by accident while doing some research about Philadelphia artists. Having lived in Philadelphia for several years, I was amazed this gal grew up practically in my backyard and yet I had never heard of her.

Melody Gardot is an American jazz singer who was born in New Jersey in 1985. She started taking music lessons at the age of nine.  At 16, she played inPhiladelphia bars on weekends for a few hours each night where she insisted on only playing music she liked.  Melody was influenced by such blues and jazz artists as Judy Garland, Miles Davis & Duke Ellington as well as Latin music artists such as Stan Getz and Caetano Veloso.

At the age of nineteen she was involved in an auto accident while cycling which left her with serious injuries. During her time spent in the hospital she learned how to play the guitar and began writing songs.  She played at various venues in Philadelphia  and was spotted by the radio station WXPN, operated by the University Of Pennsylvania who encouraged her to assemble a demo which was quickly picked up by Universal Records.

Visit her website www.melodygardot.com and listen to her fabulous tunes.  I know you will become a fan just like I have.

  2. What a talented, soulful artist. Thanks Debbie for the intro to Melody and knowing about her struggles as woman/artist. Her sound reminds me a bit of Norah Jones, plus I love this song! Happy weekend to you. I hope your not gettin buried in snow?!! Take much care,
